Upper Glasgow Council Announces Major Cemetery Expansion Project

Upper Glasgow Council is set to commence a significant expansion of the Upper Glasgow Cemetery, addressing a pressing community need as the site was projected to reach full capacity by the end of 2030. This proactive initiative ensures that residents will continue to have access to burial services well into the future.

The expansion has been made possible through the recent reclassification of operational land, allowing the Council to extend the cemetery’s boundaries and enhance its facilities. After significant community consultation, construction will commence in March 2026, and are scheduled to continue until February 2027, with the Council committed to keeping the community informed throughout the process.

A highlight of the expansion will be the upgrade of the reflection garden, which will soon feature the opportunity to purchase and display memorial plaques for departed loved ones. This enhancement aims to provide a peaceful and respectful space for remembrance, further supporting the needs of families and loved ones.

Residents should be aware that, as with any major infrastructure project, there will be some unavoidable disruptions. These may include temporary road closures, particularly along De Castella Drive and intermittent noise interruptions in the vicinity of the cemetery. The Council apologises for any inconvenience and will strive to minimise the impact on daily life.

Upper Glasgow Council thanks the community for its understanding and cooperation as this important project gets underway. Updates will be provided regularly, and residents are encouraged to reach out with any questions or concerns.
